Has a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago, then worked in Wall Street banks in NY doing both research and trading, across regions.

show details

After getting his PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago (where he worked for a recent Nobel laureate), Martín joined JPMorgan’s EM Fixed Income research team. Martín was in charge of JPMorgan’s Asia Sovereign Strategy during his first two years at JPMorgan, to then switch into its Latin American team. There he developed Local Markets products, over-all strategy products, as well as focused on the strategy of crises credits (Argentina, Uruguay during 2001/2002). Those crises allowed him to introduce new concepts and methods of analysis to value debt restructuring episodes and sovereign sustainability scenarios, as well as the pricing of sharply binomial situations (i.e. World Bank guaranteed bonds). Some of these new methods have since then become standard tools. During periods of extensive collaboration with the Capital Markets team advising sovereign and quasi-sovereigns, Martín was pulled to the other side of the Chinese wall. He joined Morgan Stanley in early 2004 to head the Latin American Strategy team, which then became a Trading Desk Strategy effort. His calls on the beginning of Brazil’s graduation, as well as his intense focus on Argentina’s debt restructuring were highlights of the first two years at Morgan Stanley. His research and strategy years put him on several media outlets frequently, as well as a regular participant in policy circles and market congresses and conferences. By late 2005 Martin led the development of the local markets trading desk at Morgan Stanley. In early 2007 Martin joined UBS to establish and run an Emerging Markets Proprietary Trading desk within a broader Credit Trading Desk. As a consequence of the global economic crisis in late 2008, UBS decided to shut down all its proprietary desk operations. Martin is a founding partner of the Baffin Capital Group and Baffin Advisors. Since the end of 2008, he shared his ideas on the global economy that has received more than 15,000 visitors, which made him a contributor to Nouriel Roubini’s RGE Monitor. The blog has now been moved to Baffin Advisors’ web site.
